BOOK 89: PATTERNED APART Keith Smith (1983)

Keith Smith writes: "In the early 1980s Philip Zimmermann was publishing small edition artists books at Open Studio in Rhinebeck, New York and offered to publish one of my books by offset lithography. He had no interest in printing an edition of one of my previous one-of-a-kind books. Philip said the book should be created on the press. Then, he added his motto, “Produce, not reproduce.” During the process of creating Patterned Apart, my book number 89, Philip taught me many things, introducing me to use offset as a medium for creating, not relegated to reproducing, existing work."

The book was printed in two-color color-separated duotones by Clifton Meador and Kevin Begos on the Heldelberg KORD at Open Studio. The main text paper was Mohawk Superfine 80 lb text with Neenah UV Ultra for the transparent endsheets. Phil Zimmermann made the lithographic film (from Keith Smith's silver-gelatin print separations) and made all the plates. Film assembly (stripping) was by Philip Zimmermann, Keith Smith and Scott McCarney. Non-chromium tanned leather from the UK is used on the hard cover case. Superior non-fade ink was used throughout. Keith did the binding. Some of the copies were hand-colored with watercolor.

The book dimensions are 11.25" x 9" x .5" (29cm x 23cm x 1.2cm). The edition was 50 signed copies with 14 additional non-sale copies lettered A through M.
